What do I do right after posting a video to Instagram as a Reel?

Hi friend.

In honor of our brand new ebook, My content method. launching the other evening, I wanted to share with you exactly what I do after posting a video to Instagram as a Reel.

Let’s first start with my exact editing and upload process. This past week I have been batch-filming my content directly into Instagram, and saving the videos as drafts. About a week ago, I filmed 21 videos, and they are sitting as drafts. When I am ready to post one, I open the video, do some minor editing, add captions, type a caption/description in Notes, copy and paste that caption into the caption box for the Instagram Reel, and create a thumbnail in Canva, I upload said thumbnail, I add topics, and then what I am supposed to do is preview and download the final video. Sometimes I remember to download it, but then other times I forget. If I forget, I hit the “share” button, then hit the “download” button. The video is then watermarked, which can be viewed as a positive or a negative.

Besides captions, one of the most important things I make sure my video possesses is a call to action! My favorite call to action is asking them to copy a keyword. Once they comment one of many keywords I have set up, ManyChat will automatically send them a direct message (DM) with the accompanying link as a button.

So I must set up the ManyChat automation(s) prior to hitting the upload button. Setting up a ManyChat automation typically takes less than 3 minutes. Here are some examples of my calls to action:

👉🏻 Comment “list” to sign up for our newsletter.
👉🏻 Comment “411” to see everything we offer at Jo & Coaching.
🔥 If you would like to stay updated on all brand new blog posts, comment “please”, and I will get you added to that list!
🔤 Comment “content ebook” to get the shop link, complete with more information.

Once the video is on my phone, and I have successfully published it to Instagram. I then share it to my stories. After I share it to my stories, then I add it to the appropriate Highlight. My current Highlights are: Q&A, Documenting, Products, Quotes, Reviews, Blog Posts, and Pinterest. I plan to have a Highlight for each platform I create educational content for.

Next, I upload that vertically-formatted file to YouTube as a short. I do this upload process on my computer (not in the app). I change up the call to action, and I include links instead of asking the viewer to comment.

After YouTube, I head over to Pinterest. I upload the Canva graphic that was used as the cover photo as a Pin, and I link the Pin out to the Instagram Reel. Next, I upload the downloaded video directly into Pinterest, and I also link that video over to Instagram. Make sure to give your title and description some thought (think SEO that educates the Pinterest algorithm). You also want to make sure you have a good organizational system, when it comes to saving videos to one or more relevant boards.

Other suggestions: You can create a blog post with the embedded video. I like to take the embed code for the Instagram Reel and make a blog post with that. I do this on a weekly basis (every Monday), for my Jo & Co. website and Instagram account.

So why do I do this? The main reason why I put my content on a website, is so that it is evergreen. The average lifespan of an Instagram reel is 14 days. The average lifespan for an Instagram post is 48 hours. The average lifespan of a blog post is 2 years, but I personally have seen WAY longer. The average lifespan of a YouTube video is 20 days or more, but honestly, you will see 2+ years depending on the topic and your competition on that specific topic.

What is the definition of Evergreen Content: Evergreen content is content that remains valuable to readers and performs well in search results for an extended period, just as the name suggests. While it’s true that most online material, like blog posts, don’t vanish after they’re published, evergreen content stands apart because of its enduring relevance.

So to answer your question, “What do I do right after posting a video to Instagram as a Reel?” The short answer is, that I make sure it receives maximum exposure by putting it on other social media platforms, and I also place it on my website and blog so that it has an Evergreen Home.
