Why Physically Writing Your Goals Drives Success
We live in a digital world where note-taking apps and virtual to-do lists are the norm. Despite this, there’s an overwhelming amount of evidence pointing to the efficacy of traditional methods—specifically, visualization and physically writing down your goals. Could something as simple as jotting down your ambitions boost your chances of achieving them? Let’s dive into the science that strongly suggests that physically writing your goals and visualizing them can offer a significant edge in your pursuit of success.
The Psychological Benefits of Writing Down Goals
Psychologist Dr. Gail Matthews from the Dominican University in California conducted a study that showcased the importance of writing down goals. The research included 267 participants and found that those who wrote down their goals were 42% more likely to achieve them compared to those who didn’t. The very act of writing engages the brain’s reticular activating system (RAS), allowing you to more clearly focus on your objectives.
Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology demonstrates that “high commitment to goals” and “difficult goals” correlated with higher performance levels. Writing down your goals makes them explicit, sets intention, and initiates commitment, which is a strong predictor of goal achievement.
The Power of Visualization
Visualization is the mental technique of creating a sensory-rich image in your mind of the desired outcome. Sports psychologists have long extolled the virtues of visualization, and now neuroscience is catching up. A Harvard Medical School study showed that participants who visualized piano exercises had almost the same neural pathways as those who physically performed the exercises.
Combining visualization with physical goal-setting can turbocharge your ambitions. It’s one thing to see it in your head, but having a tangible, written representation makes it more real.
Synergy: Writing Goals and Visualization
What happens when you combine the two—writing and visualization? Research indicates that they can complement each other in a powerful way. Writing it down commits it to memory and makes it concrete, while visualization provides the emotional texture, the motivation, and the ‘realness’ to your goals. This combo engages both the left and right hemispheres of the brain—writing appeals to the logical left, and visualization stimulates the creative right, leading to a more comprehensive, holistic approach to achieving your goals.
According to Jack Canfield, author of “The Success Principles,” the synergy between visualizing your goals and writing them down is invaluable. “The law of attraction moves you towards the dominant images you hold in your subconscious mind,” he says. “When you write down your goals, you are creating these dominant images.”
