For the longest time, my favorite one-liner has been, “Just do it now”, which is a spin on Nike’s slogan, “Just do it”. So when I came across a New York City Nike ad from September of 2008, it felt almost serendipitous.
If this is your first time seeing this, or your first time seeing this in a while, did it make you have to stop to catch your breath? That is what it did for me. It made me stop. It made me ponder.
What is it that I am putting off? What dream did I forget? What goal am I procrastinating on? Where am I failing my future self?
The work we are doing now is for our future selves. That is one of my favorite concepts to hold on to when things get tough and frustrating, or I feel like giving up.
I so badly wish we were having a two-way conversation right now.
Right now, what promise are you failing to keep with yourself?
I think, when we are feeling resistance in our lives, it is our subconscious trying to tell us something.
This resistance often manifests as a form of fear or self-doubt, holding us back from taking the steps we know we need to pursue our dreams and goals. It’s a protective mechanism, aimed at keeping us within our comfort zones. But growth and achievement lie on the other side of this discomfort.
So, how do we listen and respond to our subconscious, especially when it seems to be pulling us back?
We recognize that feeling resistance is not a sign of weakness but an experience that means we are human. It indicates that what we’re considering is significant, perhaps even transformative. Acknowledging this feeling is the first step towards understanding it.
Next, ask yourself what specifically you’re resisting and why.
Is it fear of failure, fear of judgment, or perhaps fear of success? By pinpointing the source of your resistance, you can begin to address it directly. Sometimes, simply bringing these fears into the light diminishes their power over us.
Then, consider what small steps you can take to move forward despite this resistance.
Action breeds confidence, not the other way around. By taking even small steps toward your goal, you’ll start to break down the barriers that your subconscious has erected.
Surround yourself with people who believe in your goals and will support you through the ups and downs. Seek out stories of those who have overcome similar challenges. These narratives can serve as a powerful reminder that obstacles can be surmounted, and resistance can be a gateway to profound growth.
Remember that the journey is as important as the destination.
Each step you take, even if it feels insignificant, is a victory against the resistance holding you back. Celebrate these victories, learn from the setbacks, and keep moving forward.
In the end, listening to our subconscious isn’t about letting it dictate our actions. Instead, it’s about understanding the messages it sends, addressing our fears, and taking deliberate steps toward our aspirations. When we do this, we honor our true selves and unlock our potential to achieve remarkable things.
So, how can you apply this in your own life? Start by identifying one small step you can take today toward a goal you’ve been delaying. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
The essence of that New York City Nike ad isn’t just about athletic achievement; it’s a universal call to action. It’s a reminder that we’re often our own biggest hurdle. But once we decide to leap, we unlock a potential we never knew we had.
I’d love to hear from you, so if we aren’t friends on Instagram yet, please find me there, and say hello.
What’s one promise you’ve made to yourself that you’ve been putting off? What small action can you take today to honor that promise?
I want to leave you with a thought to ponder: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”
With love, Jo.
