When you make a choice you are really making two.

I really do love writing these blog posts for you. They feel almost like love letters. Ones in which I dig deep to share with you something I “know” to be true in hopes that it will help you get to not where I am, but where you want to be. You are important to me. You being here, means you are here for a reason and a purpose.

I don’t have a lot of people in my life that I get to share my soul with, and I hope sharing it with you will change your life.

The title of this blog post, “When you make a choice you are really making two.”, came to me the other day as a thought. I wrote it down in my phone, because I didn’t want to forget the thought, and I also wanted to share it with another.

Have you ever thought this before? I knew it to be true, but I had never intentionally given it thought before the other day. I once thought about progress, and my thoughts about progress run parallel with the above thought. Progress doesn’t just build something, it also destroys something.

The invention of the Internet “destroyed” phone books, and the necessity to visit the library to access massive amounts of information. The invention of the affordable cell phone with apps, destroyed stand-alone GPS systems, and the need to print out MapQuest directions anytime you life your hometown radius. The examples really are endless.

This duality of choice also speaks to the balance of life. Just as progress can lead to the obsolescence of previous norms and technologies, it also paves the way for new innovations and opportunities. The end of one era is the beginning of another. This cycle of creation and destruction is natural and necessary for growth, both personally and societally.

When we consider the essence of choice, it’s a powerful realization to understand that each decision we make not only opens doors but closes others. This dual nature of choice echoes throughout every aspect of our lives, shaping our journey in ways we often don’t anticipate at the moment of decision.

Me sitting here right now, typing this letter to you means I am not outside with Lincoln watching him struggle up and down the driveway as he adjusts to roller skates outside of the rink, and earlier today when I was watching Lincoln play soccer, I was making the decision to not be at a fancy marketing lunch with my colleagues.

Sometimes are choices are between A and B, but sometimes we make a choices more on the subconscious level, and I think the more subconscious they are, the more impact they have on our lives. Lately I have been thinking about the subconscious mind, and how I want to channel it into my conscious decisions. Did you know your subconscious mind can make a decision up to 7 seconds before your conscious mind is aware? Our brains are insanely powerful. But it isn’t just our brains, it is us. Me. You.

The realization that every choice carries with it an inherent selection and rejection is profound. It teaches us the importance of mindfulness in our decisions. When we choose a path, we’re also choosing to leave another unexplored. This isn’t to say that one path is necessarily better than the other, but it is a recognition of the weight our choices carry. It’s a reminder that with every step forward, there’s a world we’re stepping away from, and that’s okay. It’s just part of life.

So, as we navigate through life, making choices big and small, let’s remember the duality inherent in our decisions. Let’s approach each choice with mindfulness, aware of the doors we’re opening and those we’re closing. And let’s embrace the journey, knowing that with every choice, we’re not just moving away from something, but we’re also moving towards something else—something new, something different, and perhaps, something better.

As you reflect on the choices you’ve made and the paths you’ve taken, I encourage you to see them not just as singular decisions but as complex intersections that have shaped who you are and who you will become. Your choices are powerful. They are significant. And they are yours.

I know this isn’t my typical marketing post, but I think we should all have a voice and having a voice means weaving personal with professional. I am doing that on my Instagram, I hope you don’t mind, and now I am doing that here too. I really want us all to make business and personal decisions align with one another. I think our future and our health depends on it.

Love ya, Jo.
