Why Every Blog Post and Video Should Have a Call to Action

Hi new friend. I have been talking about calls to action a lot lately, so I thought I should explain this a little further…

What is a Call to Action (CTA)?

Before we dive into why CTAs are essential, let’s first define what a Call to Action actually is. A Call to Action is a prompt that encourages the audience to take a specific action. It is typically used in marketing to convert a prospect into a lead or a lead into a customer. A CTA could be as simple as a button that says, “Click Here” or a sentence at the end of a blog post asking the reader to share the content if they found it useful. In essence, a CTA serves as a directional guide, steering your audience toward the next logical step they should take.

CTAs in Blog Posts

Every blog post should have a specific purpose, whether it’s to inform, entertain, or persuade. That purpose is unfulfilled if the reader merely digests the content and moves on without taking any additional steps. Here’s where a well-placed CTA comes into play.

Types of CTAs in Blog Posts:

  1. Subscribe to Newsletter: If your blog post aims to offer valuable insights, a natural next step for the reader would be to stay updated. Asking them to subscribe ensures that they continue to receive valuable content from you.
  2. Share on Social Media: The value of your content multiplies when shared. A simple CTA requesting readers to share the post can significantly boost its reach.
  3. Read Another Article: If the goal is to keep the audience engaged on your site, direct them to another article that is just as captivating.
  4. Contact for Services: If the blog post is about a product or service you offer, naturally you would want the reader to reach out for more information or make a purchase.

A CTA at the end of a blog post serves as a seamless transition, directing the reader on what to do next, thus increasing engagement and fulfilling the blog post’s initial objective.

CTAs in Video Content

Much like blog posts, videos also need to guide viewers toward a specific action. Considering the rising consumption of video content across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, ignoring CTAs in this medium would be a huge missed opportunity.

Types of CTAs in Video Content:

  1. Like and Subscribe: A classic but effective CTA that helps in boosting your video’s algorithmic ranking.
  2. Visit Website: If the video serves as an introduction to a product or service, asking viewers to visit your website for more information is a no-brainer.
  3. Download an App: If the video content revolves around an application, a CTA encouraging viewers to download it can be very effective.
  4. Join a Community: For educational or niche-specific content, directing viewers to a community where they can engage in further discussions can be invaluable.
  5. Comment a “keyword”: My favorite call to action is one in which you tell the view to comment a certain keyword. This is my favorite because you can power it with automation. I personally use ManyChat.

The Psychological Angle

Human beings often need a nudge to take action. According to psychological studies, a well-crafted CTA plays into the decision-making process by creating a sense of urgency or highlighting the benefits of taking action. Whether it’s the fear of missing out on a great deal or the allure of gaining something valuable, CTAs tap into human psychology to encourage action.

Final Thoughts: simply creating good content is not enough. Both blog posts and video content should aim for engagement and interaction, and the way to achieve that is through effective Calls to Action. They serve as a bridge between consuming content and taking a meaningful step. Therefore, to maximize the impact of your content, always include a well-thought-out CTA.
