The Internet is toxic, and it is ruining our society.
There, I said it.
I know there is a lot of positivity there too, and I know I am making a sweeping generalization, but the over-assumption and numbing that so many are living through right now, thanks to social media, is changing folks. Not just the person, but the way they act and in some cases, the way they parent.
What we need… What the answer is… We need more people who show up authentically and ones that are healthy individuals. We need to stop normalizing and half-efforting parenthood and life in general.
You might know this, but I created a new business a month or so ago, which led me to create a brand new Instagram account. This was the coolest thing I have ever done. Okay, lies. Not the coolest, but it created this new environment for me, thank I am really thankful for it. It has made me love Instagram so much more. Every single person I choose to follow, I make sure they are positively contributing to my life.
Outside of the computer, for the first real time in my life, I have no one negative, no one toxic, and no one that drags me down in my daily interactions. I am happier than ever. I am more confident than ever. I feel strong. I feel solid. Almost euphoric. And this outside world, I can now create inside my phone, when I decide to scroll a bit or interact with others.
If you are like me, we have been on social media, most of our lives, and over the course of 20 years, it has changed a lot. So I think starting fresh and making sure my consumption changes over time, is really smart.
You have heard that phrase before, right? The “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. I think Jim Rohn first said it. The idea behind this statement is that your habits, attitudes, and behaviors are heavily influenced by your immediate social circle. By spending time with people who possess traits you admire or aspire to have, you’re more likely to adopt those traits yourself.
This concept suggests that if you want to improve in certain areas of your life—be it professionally, emotionally, or otherwise—you should seek out individuals who excel in those areas. The influence can be both direct and indirect:
- Direct Influence: Through direct conversations, advice, or mentorship, these people can guide you towards better decisions and opportunities.
- Indirect Influence: Just by observing their behavior, work ethic, and attitudes, you can learn a lot. Their habits can gradually rub off on you, making you more like them over time.
But please don’t forget that the statement is a simplification. Many factors influence who we are and who we become, including our upbringing, education, experiences, and even our own innate tendencies. Additionally, we are all complex, and others’ influence on us can be multifaceted—both positive and negative.
To keep this simple, at the end of the day, we need to remember to be mindful of the company we keep and the influences we allow into our lives: online and offline.
So how has the landscape really changed on my Instagram feed? Every single person I follow, I get to learn from, because I picked accounts that portray the life I want and/or the life I have. As you can see, I am all things “growth mindset” right now. I have been living here for a while, but I had some heavy things weighing me down, that I didn’t know were there. Being in your 30s is so much better than your 20s. Lol.
But let’s get to why you are here… You want to know who these amazing women I follow are…
