5 Goals You Should Have as a Real Estate Agent

In the world of real estate, you quickly learn it’s not just about selling houses — it’s about juggling phone calls at dinner, managing crises on holidays, and still finding time to catch your kid’s soccer game on a Saturday. It’s a whirlwind of non-stop action, where the only constant is change and your phone ringing off the hook. But hey, that’s why we love it, right? 

Amidst this chaos, I’ve managed to carve out a set of goals that keep me sane, successful, and somewhat balanced. 

  1. Maintain your healthy personal relationships by perfecting the balancing act. — The real estate industry is one in which you “always have to be on”. Real estate transactions don’t have a pause button. If you want to take time off, you must have boundaries, systems, and a team in place to catch up with the almost 24/7 nature of the industry. In my business, I achieve this by eliminating everything off my plate that isn’t necessary for me to do. I create content that attracts my dream clients 24/7, so I don’t have to cold call, door knock, or spend every weekend holding open houses. I have systems and automations in place to create communication with incoming leads. I have a small team to help me syndicate my content, allowing me to capture more attention. I also have time blocks on my calendar so no one can schedule a call with me during family time. And that is just a peek under the hood. 😉 (I really would tell you one of my daily goals is to ensure my husband and my kids don’t hate me.)
  2. Learn how to say no. — This was my biggest game changer, and I feel like you learn this through making mistakes. In the beginning part of your career, you might not be able to say no to things you wish you could say no to, but with time, you will have more “no” replies. By saying no to things that don’t add value to my life, I can protect my time, allowing me to spend more time doing the days I love. I rarely take phone calls with anyone who isn’t a client, and I never attend industry happy hours.
  3. Take vacations often. — One of my favorite things to do is go on vacation. This past summer, we bought an RV, and during the nicer times of the year, we try to take one trip a month, with a little more concentration on the summer. In order to do this, you must have systems, strategy, and support. Right now, I have two virtual assistants and one in-person assistant. My in-person assistant is the one I lean on when I go out of town. The more business you do, the more robust of a system you will need, along with intentionality.
  4. To be loved more than you are hated. — Lol. This one is meant to be silly, but what I wanted to share with you is to have a bountiful of positive reviews. Positive reviews started the success in my career, and I highly recommend having all of your amazing clients leave you a Google review (and a Yelp review, if they are active users). I think it is more than just clients you want to have a good reputation with. You also want to have a good reputation among lenders, real estate agents, and other individuals in the real estate industry.
  5. To buy real estate. — I think every real estate agent should be an investor. Whether it is residential leases, vacation rentals, or commercial properties, there are so many opportunities to retire earlier than anticipated. Our goal has been to buy a property almost every year.

Thriving in real estate isn’t about who works the longest hours or who takes the most calls. It’s about working smart, setting boundaries, and yes, occasionally turning off your phone. If you prioritize these goals, along with a few others, you’ll not only see your career grow but also find yourself enjoying the ride. And isn’t that the ultimate goal? Here’s to making it big, staying grounded, and, most importantly, keeping it real in the real estate world.
